Mama Tuki was actually born on the feedlot (a feedlot is the last stop for animals before slaughter). The owner of the feedlot, a rodeo enthusiast, kept her for four years and trained her to be a bucker. Typically if a horse does not perform, they are sent to slaughter. For some reason, Mama Tuki was the exception to this rule, hence her full name Mama Tuki Soft Spot. The owner of the feedlot called Faith in 2004 to come get Mama Tuki when it became apparent that she was just too gentle to ever be a bucker. Despite her gentle nature she is strong! When her previous owner tried to load her in the trailer to come to Ching, she jumped a 5 foot fence to get away and she was not haulter trained at all.
Her story does not end there. Twice she has been adopted out to what appeared to be good homes. We have a "no questions asked" policy when animals are returned, but the second time she came back she had sevier rope burns around her flanks and it turns out her people heard she was trained as a bucker and they tried to "get the buck out" of her with flank straps. Because of these experiences, we will no longer adopt her out and she will stay at the Sanctuary for the rest of her life.
